“Health depends on being in harmony with our souls.”
Dr Edward Bach
Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936) was a homeopath and a medical physician who
spent his life in search of the purest methods of healing. He believed
that our attitude and state of mind play a virtual role in maintaining
health and recovering from illness. Before his death in 1936 he
developed a complete system of 38 flower remedies. These were prepared
from the wild plants, trees, or bushes near his home in Mount Vernon,
England. The remedies worked by treating the individual, not the disease
or its symptoms.
Today remedies are used worldwide for their effectiveness in balancing
the state of mind. The purpose of the remedies is to support the
client’s fight against illness by addressing the depression, anxiety,
trauma, and other emotional factors that are thought to impede the
healing process. They are best used at times of stress and anxiety,
which could develop into illness if left to run its course. Prevention
is worth a pound of cure. The remedies may be taken on their own or with
other medical treatments. They do not conflict with medications or
homeopathics. They are completely safe and have no side effects, nor are
they addictive. They are very gentle in their action and may be taken by
people of all ages from the newborn to the elderly. They may also be
used for plants and animals.
They are not a substitute for medical attention. You should consult your
medical doctor if your symptoms persist.
What are the Flower Remedies?
Dr. Bach discovered 38 remedies to be used to balance specific
emotional and mental states. He also created a combination of remedies
for difficult situations which he called Rescue Remedy. Thirty-seven of
the thirty-eight are wild flowers or tree blossom extracts. The
thirty-eighth is Rock Water, which is made of natural spring water with
healing properties.
How do they work?
As with other forms of natural medicine the individual is observed,
not the disease or its symptoms. The focus is the emotional condition of
the person. The result is that two people with the same disease may
benefit from different remedies because they will each perceive their
situations differently. A person with arthritis may be impatient with
their condition while another may just be resigned to their fate.
Different remedies would be suggested for each client.
The effect of the remedy is to transform the negative to a positive not
suppress it. Therefore a negative attitude may transform into a positive
one stimulating the individuals ability to heal themselves. This frees
the physical system, which is then better able to fight disease and
stress.
One doesn’t have to be sick to take the remedies. When we are
experiencing difficulties or fatigue or just feeling negative, the
remedies will help to lift us into a state of balance before symptoms
may appear.
Health and happiness result from being in harmony with our own nature,
and doing the work for which we are individually suited. Disease is a
reaction to interference. This may be temporary.
Dr. Bach divided the remedies into seven groups.
Fear
Uncertainty
Insufficient interest in present circumstances
Loneliness
Over-sensitivity to influences and ideas
Despondency or despair
Over-care for the welfare of others
Dr. Bach also defined the journey into balance as Peace, Hope, Faith,
Certainty, Wisdom, and Love.
What does the Bach Flower Practitioner do?
In a consultation the client discusses their feelings and things
they find stressful. After discussing the emotions and feelings involved
the practitioner will suggest remedies that may balance the emotions. In
many cases 6 or 7 remedies may be suggested. The client may purchase
remedies at their local health food store and make a dosage bottle. The
client may also use the remedies directly from the bottle by placing 2
drops in a cup of water, which is sipped at intervals. The remedy is
held in the mouth for a few moments before swallowing. In some cases
relief is almost immediate but in more deep seated emotional imbalances
this may take weeks or months to feel a balance.
